UN Population Fund envoy submits credentials to FM

TEHRAN, Sept. 16 (MNA) – The United Nations Population Fund’s new representative to Tehran submitted his credentials to Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Wednesday.

Iran and the UNFPA have closely cooperated in running joint projects on population, Mottaki told the new representative.

He added that Iran attaches great importance to domesticating population projects in accordance with the taste and values of its people.

In 2009, Iran chaired the committee tasked with implementing population projects and it did its best to better implement such projects, the foreign minister explained.

The new representative also said that the two sides had a close cooperation on joint projects.

He expressed hope such cooperation between Iran and UNFPA will increase during his tenure.

The UNFPA began operations in 1969 as the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (the name was changed in 1987) under the administration of the United Nations Development Fund. In 1971 it was placed under the authority of the United Nations General Assembly.

The agency’s main goals are: access to reproductive health services by 2015, primary education and closing the gender gap in education by 2015, reducing maternal mortality by 75 percent by 2015, and reducing infant mortality.
